Not to cop out, but I've read really good things lately about Stanley Hauerwas' interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount in his new commentary on Matthew. Its in the same series that Vanhoozer's commentary on Jeremiah is supposed to be in. Brazos is the name of it, I believe.John Paullinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12286709775482914784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4585134877503047781.post-74090258378848888642008-02-04T12:15:00.000-08:002008-02-04T12:15:00.000-08:00Wow, that was truly well stated - certainly dramat...Wow, that was truly well stated - certainly dramatic and nuanced exegesis. Your last point made me think of Tit 2:10, "adorn the doctrine of God". We've become so timid in talking about works for fear of legalism we have entirely lost Paul's unashamed exhortation to be "zealous for good works" (Tit 2:14, 7; 3:14). We do the church a great disservice when we speak ambiguously about works.

I am a third of the way into Matthew these days and Jesus has already equated obedience with eternal life 9 times (5:13, 20, 30; 6:14, 24; 7:13-14, 19, 23, 24-27). Traditionally the Sermon on the Mount has been interpreted in much the same way as the Reformed view of Romans 2 - Jesus is making impossible demands only actualized in his imputed righteousness. How do you interpret them in light of Romans 2?david gentinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04682161542505476663noreply@blogger.com
